Mine Facts

What / How / Where: a proposed underground coal mine would be established just 5 km from Baynes Sound above the Buckley Bay Ferry terminal. Waste rock would be 56% of the mined material – a total of 18 million tons at  the end of the 16-year life of the mine. The waste pile would sit in the heart of the Cowie Creek watershed, just above Baynes Sound’s vibrant shellfish industry that employs 700. Washing the coal would require a lot of fresh water. Trucking coal to Port Alberni for shipment to Asia in large B-train trucks would be dangerous on narrow mountain highways. Trucks would leave the mine every 20 minutes, 24 hour a day, and 7 days a week.

Who: BC’s Compliance Energy Corporation (CEC) has partnered with I-Comox Coal Inc. (owner, Itochu Corporation of Japan) and LG International Investments (Canada) Limited (owner, LG International Corp. of Korea).

When: BC’s Environmental Assessment process will likely conclude in early 2013. If the BC government grants the permit to mine, CEC might open more mines nearby in its extensive coal tenure, and they would probably be open pit.
